What’s new in CloudBerry S3 Backup 2.0

Note: this post applies to CloudBerry Backup 2.0 and later.

CloudBerry S3 Backup is a powerful Windows program that automate backup and restore processes to Amazon S3 cloud storage.

In the release we are introducing two important enhancements: the ability to backup data locally to local disks, SAN, NAS and remote file shares, and the ability to use custom SMTP server for notifications. The latter is Server Edition only feature though.

Local backup

With this feature you can backup data to local disks, SAN, NAS and remote file shares. This is useful if you like to backup only subset of your data to the cloud for advanced protection but also like to keep your data locally for fast access and reduced costs.

There is a new account type called File System Storage account and you have an option to choose it on the Backup Wizard dialog.

All you have to do is to specify the path to the folder where you want the backup created.

Everything else will work just like with any other storage provider.

Note: currently local backup feature doesn't support versioning, encryption and compression. These options are coming in the future releases.

Update 5/9/11: as of version 2.2.1 you can now specify customer credentials for network location. Check out here for more info.

Custom SMTP Server

Prior to release 2.0 you could only use CloudBerry Notification service to get email notification on backup completion. Quite a few our customers wanted to be able to use their own SMTP service to send the notification. in this release we are introducing an option to use the custom SMTP server. This new option is available for CloudBerry Backup Server Edition only.

We have introduced a new option on the Backup Wizard notification step where you can choose between CloudBerry Notification service and custom SMTP server.

Just specify SMTP settings on the configuration dialog.

CloudBerry Backup: Include / Exclude folder enhancements

Note: this post applies to CloudBerry Backup 1.9 and later.

CloudBerry S3 Backup is a powerful Windows program that automate backup and restore processes to Amazon S3 cloud storage.

Imagine the situation:  you select the folder to backup up and then select only a subset of folders and files underneath it. See the screenshot. In the previous release if you add more files to the parent folder they would not get copied when CloudBerry Backup runs.

In the newer release 1.9 we introduced more intelligence to this feature. All new files in the parent folders will get automatically copied when backup process runs.

If you now look at the summary screen you will see the list of excluded folders:

This was one of the issues that many customers complained about and we wanted to make it work more smoothly.

CloudBerry Backup: Introducing Multipart Upload and Large Object support

CloudBerry S3 Backup is a powerful Windows program that automate backup and restore processes to Amazon S3 cloud storage.

A few weeks ago we introduced Multi-Part Upload and Large Object support for CloudBerry Explorer.  With this release we are introducing support for Multi-Part Upload and Large objects support in CloudBerry S3 Backup. This exciting new feature allows you to break large files into smaller parts (chunks) and upload them in any sequence.  We think that Multi-Part Upload is most important enhancement to Amazon S3 service this year. (The second important enhancement has been the versioning support)

With Multipart Upload you can:

1.       Make data upload more reliable, we need to re-upload only failed chunks, not the whole file.

2.       Make data upload faster by breaking down the files into chunks we can upload the in multiple thread efficiently utilizing available network bandwidth

3.       You can also pause and resume uploads. As always we would be happy to hear your feedback and you are welcome to post a comment.

Large Object support allows you to upload and store the objects up to 5TB in size.

Multipart Upload and Large Object support work transparently to the users as a part of the Simple Mode.   In other words you can now reliably upload large objects to Amazon S3 storage and access them with other tools.  

If you need to modify the size of the chunk go to Tools | Options | Advanced.

What’s next?

We are also going to deprecate Advanced Mode that uses CloudBerry Chunking mechanism. What’s more we will also deprecate CloudBerry Versioning support and replace it with Amazon S3 native Versioning.  We will keep both though for backward compatibility. This way we will try to fulfill our strategy to offer the product that doesn’t lock in the users to any specific data format and / or tool. You will always be able to retrieve your data using other Amazon S3 clients.
