CloudBerry Backup: Path not found issue and how to resolve it.

Note: this post applies to CloudBerry Backup 1.7 and later.

CloudBerry S3 Backup is a powerful Windows program that automate backup and restore processes to Amazon S3 cloud storage.
In the blog post we would like to discuss the Path not found issue that recently many customers come across and how to address it.
In the version 1.7 of CloudBerry Backup run backup process using the service regardless whether you start it interactively using the console or by schedule. We have done it in such a way to offer consistent results in manual and scheduled backup. This is important because when you run the backup manually you run it under your own user account. On the hand when you run the backup by schedule you might run it under another user account with another set of access rights. As a result certain files and folders (or even network shares) might not be accessible.
Now comes “Path not found” issue. By default the service account is local system. It doesn’t have access to network shares and causes Path not found issue.

How to change the service account

To change the service account right click the left part of status bar and select 'Change Service Account'

Change the default service account with the account with access to shared folders you back up.

What if I run WHS add-in

There are two ways to update the service account in WHS add-in:
1. From welcome page - right click on clock image, popup menu will appear.
Welcome page is visible when home server console has started or if click Backup wizard (Restore wizard) and press Cancel.
2. Go through edit backup plan wizard up to page Schedule. Note will be displayed.

Special note for Windows Home Server Users: Unfortunately after you upgrade WHS add-in to the latest version it reverts back the service account to local system and you have to manually change it again. We are working on finding a way to preserve the service account.

As always we would be happy to hear your feedback and you are welcome to post a comment.

How to grant permissions to CloudFront Origin Access Identity using Bucket Policies and CloudBerry S3 Explorer

Note: this post applies to CloudBerry Explorer PRO 2.4.2 and later.

As always we are trying to stay on top of the new functionality offered by Amazon S3  to offer the most compelling Amazon S3 and CloudFront client on Windows platform.

Following the recent announcement of support for using Canonical User IDs in bucket policies, CloudBerry Lab added a support of Canonical IDs into CloudBerry Explorer.

Canonical User IDs are account identifiers that are used to grant an AWS Account access to an Amazon S3 bucket or object.  Previously, Canonical User IDs were used with Amazon S3 ACL’s. You can now use those same IDs when authoring a bucket policy.  You can also use Canonical User IDs to grant access to a CloudFront Origin Access Identity to support Amazon CloudFront's private content feature.

The following example bucket policy grants a CloudFront Origin Identity permission to GET all objects in your Amazon S3 bucket. The CloudFront Origin Identity is used to enable CloudFront's private content feature. To learn more about CloudFront's support for serving private content, check out our previous blog post.

Right click a bucket with Private Content Distribution and choose Bucket Policy from the context menu to run Bucket Policy Designer

image001

In the Bucket Policy Designer click “to:” to choose the principal. Note “/*” suffix to make sure you apply the policy to all objects in the bucket.

Policy01

CloudBerry Explorer automatically recognizes if you create a Bucket Policy for a bucket with associated CloudFront distribution with Private Content and shows Origin Access Identity in the Address Book.

This way with a few clicks you get the policy that will grant a CloudFront Origin Identity permission to GET all objects in your Amazon S3 bucket.

How to free up CloudBerry Lab product license

Note: this post applies to CloudBerry Explorer 2.4.1, CloudBerry Backup 1.7 and later.

As always we are adding features that our customers are requesting.  One of the pain points our customers have been complaining about is a requirement to contact CloudBerry Lab support in order to free up the license so that the product could be reinstalled on another computer.
With the newer release of CloudBerry Explorer and CloudBerry Backup come with an option to free up the license. To do that, go to Help-> Release License menu.
image001
Confirm your choice in the dialog box.
After the license is reset you can’t use the product any more.  You can, but you should enter the license again. Anyway you can now install the product on another computer and activate the license again.  We hope this small enhancement will make your experience with CloudBerry Lab products a little easier.

What if I have CloudBerry Backup for WHS?
This is a special note for WHS users.  To free up the license on WHS go to Settings and then CloudBerry Backup. Click release license as shown on the screen below.

How to manage Amazon Identity and Access Management Service (IAM) with CloudBerry S3 Explorer

Note: this post applies to CloudBerry Explorer 2.4 PRO and later.

As always we are trying to stay on top of the new functionality offered by Amazon S3 to offer the most compelling Amazon S3 and CloudFront client on Windows platform.
Identity and Access Management Service is a new addition to AWS Family that allows you to:
• Identity management – Enables you to manage your private identity space under your AWS account. It will allow you to create, update and delete both identities and groups in your own space.
• Capability management – Allows you to control what permissions individual identities will have in your AWS environment
• Least privilege – Enables you to lock down your AWS environment and only provide identities with the least privilege required when accessing AWS resources under your control
• Per user usage tracking – Enables to track usage of your AWS resources on a per identity basis
In the newer release of CloudBerry Explorer we are introducing support for IAM service. Although we are trying to expand our S3 support, you can use CloudBerry Explorer to manage IAM service when it comes to other AWS such as EC2, SimpleDB, SQS, etc.
You can access IAM Manager using Access Manager program menu
IAM4-main
Here is a list of then features we offer:
1. Create/Edit/Delete user
2. Create/Edit/Delete group
3. List policies for user/group
4. Add Policy to User/Group
5. Add/Remove user from group
6. Generate Access/Secrete key for user
7. Create Policy with Policy designer

This screen demonstrates how you can generate an Access/Secrete key pair for a user, so that he can access Amazon Web services just like any other regular user.
IAM2
And here is a Policy Designer screen. Those who are familiar with our Amazon S3 Policy Designer can hit the found running as it works exactly the same way.
IAM3-Policy-Designer
There are quite a few things left to be implemented when it comes to full support for Identity and Authentication Service. We are committed to improving this tool and you will see more features implemented in the near future.
Note: Access Manager is only available in CloudBerry Explorer PRO.
Note: since IAM is not limited to Amazon S3 and covers most of the other Amazon Web Services it is likely we will implement IAM as a separate tool in the future with its own pricing.
As always we would be happy to hear your feedback and you are welcome to post a comment.
