How to sync local folder with Amazon S3 bucket with CloudBerry S3 Explorer

Note: this post applies to CloudBerry Explorer 1.6.3 and later.

As always we are adding features that our customers are requesting. This time we decided to add an ability to synchronize the content of your local folder with Amazon S3 bucket. In other words now you can configure make sure the files on your local computer are identical to those in your Amazon S3 storage account. This might be helpful when you want to upload the recent copies of your local files to S3

How to configure synchronization?

First of all we have a new item in the program menu that will help you find the new feature easily.

Click Add Sync Folder to open a configuration dialog. In the opened dialog just enter display name, which is anything you want and will help reference the synchronization later. Choose the source and the target and select the path. Note that your currently selected folders on the left and on the right panel are taken automatically. The source can be a local computer or S3. Currently you can’t sync between S3 accounts but this is something we will add later.

If you are not happy with the selection just click the “…” button to browse the folder. You can browse local folders

… and your Amazon S3 storage account

How to synchronize the folder?

To sync the folders just go to the same program menu, choose the folder you want to sync and one of the options available as shown on the screen. As you can see you can

  • Sync Left to Right
  • Sync Right to Left
  • Sync both ways

The panel at the bottom of the screen will show you the synchronization progress

Looking ahead

Currently you can only manually synchronize the folders. In the future we will add the ability to specify a synchronization schedule. As always we are looking for your feedback and we are eager to improve the feature to make it work better for you!

Conclusion

The ability to sync the content of Amazon S3 bucket with the local folder is a huge productivity boost. No longer do you have to look for modified files and manually select them. CloudBerry Explorer will make it automatically on your behalf!

If you came to this post by chance you should know that CloudBerry S3 Explorer is a Windows freeware product that helps managing Amazon S3 storage and CloudFront . You can download it at http://cloudberrylab.com/

Please add the ability to ignore "date modified". This will allow for synching folders based on file names only. This will be helpful since my "date modified" is always different from my local machine after I change headers on the uploaded files.

Hi Andy, is this not similar to doing a backup if you're syncing files between two locations?

Hi Mike,

no, it is not similar to doing backup. Backup is fully automated process with a lot of configuration options to make it flexible. Sync feature in the Explorer is something you have run manually.

thanks
Andy
